…. Disappearing youth 17 plus, Take the recent Glasgow Uni race for example, only half a dozen or so juniors clocking in the first 50 finishers, the first 3 women home were vets, our own runners ( 1 junior, 1 senior, 10 vets ). You would think that being a University race it would be a draw for the younger runner. Perhaps the 2 0’clock start was a bit early? The Kelvin Campus is a state of the art facility yet on Saturday apart from the runners the tumbleweed was blowing through it, the dance studio was being used by what looked like 5 of the more mature students doing physical jerks and in the space age fitness suite a young couple were feeling the burn by lying on the mats in the corner. Roll on the Glasgow Commonwealth Games over 50’s only. How can we get more of our younger runners interested in racing ? and I mean the under 40’s.

It's not just athletics. Every sport is suffering from lack of numbers & participants. I think that youngsters are more interested in watching than in taking part. Just look at how busy the pubs with televisions were yesterday. Regards, Max.
